Large Format Portraiture

 What is Large Format?

Large Format photography refers to an imaging format of 4x5 inches or larger. Most Large Format cameras are view-cameras, featuring a slew of controls on both the front and rear standards, allowing for technical and creative control not possible with smaller formats.

Beyond the benefits of perspectival correction, control of apparent depth-of-field, and so many other techniques, Large Format cameras offer unparalleled image quality and resolution. A 4x5 negative has a resolution fifteen times greater than a frame from a 35mm film or full-frame digital camera.

While Large Format usage dwindled with the need for faster turnaround times and quantity over quality, there is nothing on the market today that is able to come near the imaging quality of a well made view-camera and a fresh sheet of film.
